cousin Lara

August was the month of house guests around here.  And we loved it!  Last weekend my cousin Lara and her boyfriend Matt were here, all the way from Vermont.  It was a quick stop thru on their trip, so we all enjoyed some hanging out and relaxing, as well as doing some good ol' exploring right in our own backyard.  There's something really nice to having visitors that are well traveled, and have been to the Bay Area a few times before, so they require nothing more than some good company.  And a nice meal and some wine never hurt.  We love you guys, hope to see you again soon!
Once again, Ryan really really enjoyed hanging out with Matt.  So every chance he got, he asked Matt to read to him.  Thanks for being so patient Matt!
We all took a walk along the water here in Benicia, had lunch on First St, and then walked back.  A glorious day had by all.

About 2 weeks prior, Lara had challenged me to take the ALS Icebucket Challenge -- and dump a bucket of ice water on my head in order to spread awareness for ALS.  I ignored it, hoped I could avoid it.  But then Connor and Elena challenged Ryan, and Ry saw the video of them doing it and wanted in.  So I couldn't ignore it any longer.  And Kaitlyn is just a trooper and wanted in no matter what.  So, we made our donation to ALS, then Lara got to douse me with water and the kids had more fun than I ever thought imaginable dumping water over their heads…over and over and over.  So much for the California drought!  At least we did it on our back lawn, which is in obvious need of some water.
