Birthday Boy #2

Just a few days back was a big milestone in the Bayer clan.  Ed turned 90!  He didn't want a big bash, so we celebrated with a small family brunch at a delicious restaurant literally ON the water in Berkeley.  He looked dapper, we all ate our weight in food, and the kids behaved rather well.  All in all, a great day to celebrate a great man.
Happiest of Birthdays to you Nonno!  We hope this year is the best one yet for you.

The kiddos got a little squirrely inside, so we took a little break to do some running and shark hunting (from land of course!)

Birthday boy #1

Last week was Daddy-o's birthday.  Much like mine this year, it was a mid week birthday.  Eddy took the day off, to do oh-so-fun things like check in with the oral surgeon due to a tooth he had just gotten yanked out (it was fractured, ouch) 2 weeks prior, and go see the tax man about our taxes.  Super exciting!  Ryan was also on day 2 of missing school due to a fever, so my parents were kind enough to come watch the kids all day so I could go to work.  They stayed for Eddy's home made birthday dinner and cake.  And of course there were a few presents.  Yippee!
Happy Birthday Eddy!

a glimpse

A glimpse into our lives this past week...

The Bayer cubs have really hit their stride with playing together.  In fact, that's all they want to do some mornings.  Auntie Dana came to watch them last weekend, and it took them until lunch time to actually leave the house, because Ryan and Kaitlyn didn't really want to go anywhere.  They were happy as clams just playing, at home, in the PJs.
Don't get me wrong, they have their share of fighting/whining/crying too.  But these sweet moments make it all worth it.

I took the kids on a long (almost 3 mile) bike ride last weekend.  Me on foot, the two kids on bikes, NO stroller.  It was a first.  And felt really good!  They did great.   Kaitlyn on her Strider bike is nowhere near as fast as Ryan on his real bike, so it was a good pace for me to run/walk along side her, and Ryan has gotten pretty good at riding just far enough for me to want to tell him to wait and then he waits without me asking.   Since I didn't bring the stroller, there was no where to put water bottles, so Ryan was all in with the idea for him to wear a backpack to carry their water.  How did I get so lucky?
There is a fairly big hill to get back to our house, and Ry can usually ride up half of it, so I carried K's bike and the two of them pushed Ry's the rest of the way up.  Teamwork!

Ryan has been asking for days, trying to think of new ways to earn more Legos.  So we finally sat down and came up with a chore chart.  It was entirely his idea, and with a little guidance from me we came up with a very do-able list for him to help out and keep me from getting frustrated when he doesn't listen in the mornings before school.  So far it's going great!  He is super motivated.  He'll be earning a new set of Legos in no time.

These pics are quite terrible, but it was too cute to not share.  The kids found a box of those packing peanuts, and created their own game -- one of them ran around the house dropping peanuts one at a time.  The other one picked them up and put them in the green basket.  Then they would switch.  Siblings are the best!

Last week was Read Across America, and Dr Seuss' birthday -- which made for some fun days at school.  Ryan got to taste Green Eggs and Ham, which he said he liked, he got to wear a crazy hat one day and crazy socks another.  And then got to dress as his favorite character from a book one day -- we all know that Ryan and dressing up do not go hand in hand.  So we didn't put too much thought into it. But the day before, Ryan and his friend Eli agreed to dress up as Thing 1 and Thing 2.  Clearly, Ry did not agree to a blue wig (which we didn't have anyway, so that worked out), but it was cute nonetheless.

And the end to a beautiful week -- I ended up in wine country with the kids while Eddy was hitting the links, and forced these two to "strike a pose".  Not gonna lie, I love California in the spring.  So beautiful!

the TK Oscars

Last Friday Ryan's class had an awards ceremony for the last 30 minutes of school.  It was the TK Oscars.  Each child received an award, the envelope presented by his teacher Mrs Henning, and the award announced by the school principle Mrs Abelee.  All the parents were invited.  There was a red carpet and trophies.  And it was super cute!

Ryan received the award for Responsibility.  Shocker.  He was honored for following the rules, listening to instructions and encouraging his classmates to do the right thing.  Of course he was!  Such a good kiddo.

good ol' girl time

2 weekends ago I skipped town for the chilly East Coast for a girl weekend.  And it was fabulous!  It was a weekend filled with laughter, and reminiscing about our grad school days, and long discussions about our lives, our families, the world.  Oh, and lots of wine and good food.  I love these girls with all my heart, and there's nothing like spending 3 days together -- no kids around to interrupt our sentences, no husbands around to distract us.  Can't wait til we can do it again!
Super big thanks to Eddy, and our families, for helping out with the kiddos so I could go away.

Cristen and I flew from SF, to Charlotte NC where our good friend Katie lives.  Jen flew in from snowy Boston.  And together the 4 of us drove 3 more hours to reach Charleston, SC where we spent the weekend.  It was abnormally low temps, in the 20s, while we were there.  But we didn't care -- we still chatted, and loved every minute.

our dinner spot -- delicious!

The next day we took a long walk on the beach, saw tons of starfish and even spotted a dolphin!

And after all of our adventures, we made the drive back to Charlotte and stopped for dinner in Columbia SC -- saw this sign on the door of the restaurant.  Not a sign I see every day!
